Aran Wool throws for Summer

ARANMILLS2017 333

In Ireland the weather can be very changeable to say the least. We know from talking to customers in our Dublin store when visiting Ireland they bring everything. Shorts, t-shirts, coats, rain macs , sweaters (usually picked up here when the weahter turns!) and umbrellas and Irish essential.

We are well use to this and you can’t always plan around the weather sometimes you just have to get out there and enjoy it.

Featured this week is our Aran Wool throw made in Westport by Aran Woollen Mills using Merion Wool with interlocking Aran Stitching throughout.  Perfect for wrapping up if you are sitting on the beach or for picnics.

MCN1

We also stock a lovely colourful range of  McNutt’s of Donegal who are based in Downings in north County Donegal and use some really beautiful soft Lambswool and the perfect accompaniment to sitting out in the garden in the evenings to throw over your shoulders when things get chilly.

ed2

We also stock Eddie Doherty Tweed throws all Hand woven in Ardara County Donegal , incredibly each throw is hand woven and can take up to a week to be made, a much heavier throw, no matter what the evenings throw at you this will keep you warm, also great to use as a picnic blanket.

Lastly the Aran Shamrock Throw is very popular with visitors , perfect for long lazy afternoons on the beach , just be sure to have your rain mac close! Any questions just email us info@donegalshop.ie

Hand Knit Arans In Dublin

TristanPhotoShoot2016 054

This is a Black Sheep Wool Hand Knit Aran Cardigan all knitted by hand in County Donegal. When you compare a machine knit Aran to a Hand Knit Aran the first thing that strikes you is the weight. Not that there is anything wrong with a machine made Aran, we sell dozens of them everyday. A Hand Knit is something really special. Hand Knits can weigh up to 2 kilos with most weighing around 1.2 kilos.

This Brown Colour is the natural colour of Black Sheep Wool, a really popular option in store. The combination of stitches in a Hand Knit are always more usual with different combinations such as the diamond and Trelis stitches shown above.

TristanPhotoShoot2016 059

A Hand Knit can take up to six weeks to make, between the labour and the wool you can understand their sale price can be up to €299. The prices insures the Knitters are given a fair price for their work. Our Hand Knits are made by local Donegal Women for Magee Knitwear . Each Hand Knit is signed by the person who made it for that stamp of authenticity.

How to care for your Aran Sweater

img_2034

We get asked everyday what’s the best way to care for your Aran Sweater. As most of our Arans are made by Merino Wool some labels will say they are machine washable. It all depends on the machine and it’s wool cycle whether or not it is really cold.

dsc_0093

We always say hand washing is best. Use tepid water, really luke warm. You can also use some generic hair shampoo and conditioner and wash your Aran as though it were like hair, it is full of oils after all and this approach will keep the wool nice and soft.

dsc_0124

We also sell 100% Pure new Wool Arans such as the one pictured above and the use of shampoo and conditioner will increase the softness of this wool which is not as soft to the touch as Merino wool can be.

dsc_0120

Rinse out by hand be careful not to ring out to hard and damage the stitches. We then lay out our Arans flat on a table over a towel and let the garment dry naturally.

The best way to care for your Aran is really not to wash at all, baby wipes can be used to clean away small stains. Wool Lite can be used in place of Shampoo and Conditioner.

We hope this is of some help any questions just email us info@donegalshop.ie !

Áine Behan the woman behind this beautiful brand. Áine grew up on the West Coast of Ireland surrounded by a family of knitters and crafters. Growing up and Watching her family members knitting Aran Sweaters from instincts rather than patterns from a young age had a huge influence on her and encouraged her to turn this into a very creative and successful career.

Ainehatnecksetgreen

We love her use of Donegal Yarns in The Kilcarra Range that uses the best of Donegal yarn to make the red Harlequin Wrap featured above.

Back to Basics: Merino Wool Aran Sweater

Guest blogger modestdeposits here and this week, I’m going back to the basics with this classic Irish Wool Aran Sweater. This beautiful piece deserves its moment in the spotlight, see for yourself –

dsc_0055dsc_0061dsc_0066dsc_0093

Think classic.

Think timeless.

Think this exact Aran Sweater.

Truly, my closet is not complete without this piece. Of course we all need our go to knit sweater; the one that you can wear casually, layer over or under other items, and dress up or down. Yes, this sweater satisfies the requirement of this universal staple that all men and women should have in their closet but it’s more than just that.

I love the simplicity of this sweater. It’s perfectly simplistic but only because it’s really not. As you begin to look closer, this sweater becomes anything but simple. Every single detail from the fit, structure, pattern, knit, yarn, material, collar, sleeves, etc. is planned and executed exceptionally. The sweater seems perfectly simple really, even I initially failed to notice these little details because you put this sweater on and it’s just right. It feels right. It looks right. It fits and falls on your body right. It’s easy because you know in all circumstances, in all styles, this sweater fulfills its purpose passing its test with flying colors.

Again, I have to give a shout out to this garment’s quality of wool. This sweater is not only made locally in County Kildare, but it is also 100% pure new Irish wool. This Aran sweater is exceptionally warm yet breathable and the Irish wool gives the garment a structured, shapely fall. I say this time and time again but you really don’t know this quality of wool exists until you experience it first-hand. This for me took moving to Ireland and wearing the locally sourced, 100% Irish made wool as seen in this sweater.

From me to you, I wouldn’t go another season without having this gem in my closet. For inquiries or to place an order see our website here or email us at info@donegalshop.ie.

Just in Time for Christmas, The Irish Wool Scarf

It’s official, we’ve found the perfect last minute holiday gift for friends and family: our 100% Lambswool Scarves, woven locally here in Tippery, Ireland! For only 24.99, these scarves are perfect gifts for this Christmas season.

img_4389Blogger modestdeposits here and I will be purchasing a handful of these for my family and friends back at home in the United States. Here’s why I find these scarves to be the perfect Christmas gifts:

  1. These scarves make the perfect holiday gift for numerous reasons. The first reason being they are one size fits all. This means, you don’t have to worry about getting the wrong size or potentially offending someone if you do.
  2. The second reason we find these scarves to be the perfect holiday gift is their practicality. These scarves are practical because as a gift, these will be worn quite often. Due to the quality of the Irish wool, these scarves are breathable and proper in a range of different weather. Here in Ireland, these scarves can be worn about 75% of the year, in almost all seasons, and they are the perfect addition to almost any outfit. Plus, due to the quality of wool, these scarves are extremely durable and will last years and years.
  3. Another reason we love these scarves as gifts this Christmas is their timeless and classic style. You really can’t go wrong here. Whether you’re buying for your auntie, grandfather, or even 15 year old niece, these scarves appeal to both genders and all age groups. It makes these scarves as a gift, a sure win in the present gifting realm.
  4. Lastly, your friends and family will love receiving these scarves as gifts due to the high quality 100% Irish Lambswool. I’ve noticed it time and time again with the Irish wool sold here at The Donegal Shop, how overall pleasant the feel tends to be. Back in America where I’m from, you purchase wool and you always have to endure some kind of itchiness or irritation in order to reap the warmth and style benefits of wool. What I love about the products at The Donegal Shop is that all the wool is consistently soft and gentle on my extremely sensitive skin. You really can tell the quality of wool in these products and this is consistent even through these 100% Irish Lambswool Scarves. I wear them on my bare skin and only reap the benefits. I love, love, love them for this reason.

These scarves come in 20+ colors and styles in store as well as a handful of colors and styles online. See them here.

Why we’re in love with the Aran Funnel Neck Jacket

Guest blogger modestdeposits here and let me tell you, I am absolutely in love with this Aran jacket. I think this jacket has made me fall in love with Merino Wool. I mean look how lovely this garment is-

dsc_5298dsc_5202dsc_5193

First, I’m obsessed with the style of this jacket. It falls perfectly and has an effortless look to it. I get the impression that it’s quite universal in its fit as well, flattering all different body types. Plus, you get two completely different looks depending on how you zip the jacket. I’m also fond of the different styles of knit design featured on the jacket. It’s the subtle details like this and the buttons that make this jacket even better.

Second, I am officially in love with Merino Wool’s softness. This jacket is made of 100% Merino Wool made in Ireland and you can tell. The quality of this wool is unparalleled. I typically would associate wool with some kind of itchiness or scratchiness, but this Merino Wool lacks both these qualities and instead is incredibly soft. The wool in this jacket is touchable and my sensitive skin found it quite pleasant.

dsc_5263dsc_5280dsc_5345

Also, I will never get used to how warm Merino Wool is. It truly surprises me every time. I threw on this outfit on a chilly, windy 9°  C afternoon then proceeded to walk along the canal. My company was dressed in a heavy winter coat and gloves and then there was me, in my super cute jacket warm as a pug. I swear it’s not sorcery, it’s just the incredible capability of Merino Wool to keep one warm.

Any who, I’m excited to have this cozy piece in my closet this winter. I’m even thinking about gifting it to my loved ones.

This jacket comes in two colors, this dark green pictured above and a lovely light camel. See it here.
