It is said these Fisherman Sweaters originated in the Aran Islands, where each stitch has a special meaning. On the sleeves you can see the diamond stitch which represents the shape of the fishing net mesh and is also a traditional symbol of wealth, success and treasure. The basket stitch runs along the centre and sides of this sweater which is said to represent the fisherman’s basket and the hope of abundant catch.
